Hardened Hearts and Rebellion

Acts 28:25-28 NLT  And after they had argued back and forth among themselves, they left with this final word from Paul: "The Holy Spirit was right when he said to your ancestors through Isaiah the prophet, [a] 26 -   'Go and say to this people: When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.  27 -   For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes--so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to Me and let Me heal them.' 28 -   So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it."

Ezekiel 12:1-2 NLT  Again a message came to me from the LORD:  2 -   "Son of man, you live among rebels who have eyes but refuse to see. They have ears but refuse to hear. For they are a rebellious people.

Matthew 13:12-16 NLT  To those who listen to My teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But for those who are not listening, even what little understanding they have will be taken away from them.  13 -   That is why I use these parables, For they look, but they don't really see. They hear, but they don't really listen or understand.  14 -   This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah [a]  that says, 'When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.  15 -   For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes--so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to Me and let Me heal them.'  16 -   "But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear.

Mark 4:12 NLT  so that the Scriptures [a] might be fulfilled: 'When they see what I do, they will learn nothing. When they hear what I say, they will not understand. Otherwise, they will turn to Me and be forgiven.'"

Luke 8:10 NLT  He replied, "You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures [a] might be fulfilled: 'When they look, they won't really see. When they hear, they won't understand.'

John 12:37-43 NLT  But despite all the miraculous signs Jesus had done, most of the people still did not believe in Him.  38 -   This is exactly what Isaiah the prophet had predicted: [b] "LORD, who has believed our message? To whom has the LORD revealed His powerful arm?"  39 -   But the people couldn't believe, for as Isaiah also said, [a]  40 -   "The Lord has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts--so that their eyes cannot see, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to Me and have Me heal them."  41 -   Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah's glory.  42 -   Many people did believe in Him, however, including some of the Jewish leaders. But they wouldn't admit it for fear that the Pharisees would expel them from the synagogue.  43 -   For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.

Romans 11:7-10 NLT  So this is the situation: Most of the people of Israel have not found the favor of God they are looking for so earnestly. A few have--the ones God has chosen--but the hearts of the rest were hardened.  8 -   As the Scriptures say, [c] "God has put them into a deep sleep (G2660). To this day He has shut their eyes so they do not see, and closed their ears so they do not hear."  9 -   Likewise, David said, "Let their bountiful table become a snare, a trap that makes them think all is well. Let their blessings cause them to stumble, and let them get what they deserve.  10 -   Let their eyes go blind so they cannot see, and let their backs be bent forever."

- - - - -

[a] Isaiah 6:9-10 NLT  And He said, "Yes, go, and say to this people, 'Listen carefully, but do not understand. Watch closely, but learn nothing.'  10 -   Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to Me for healing."

[b] Isaiah 53:1, 5, 8 NLT  Who has believed our message? To whom has the LORD revealed His powerful arm? 5 -  But He was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. 8 -   Unjustly condemned, He was led away. No one cared that He died without descendants, that His life was cut short in midstream. But He was struck down for the rebellion of My people.

[c] Isaiah 29:9-14 NLT  Are you amazed and incredulous? Don't you believe it? Then go ahead and be blind. You are stupid, but not from wine! You stagger, but not from liquor!  10 -   For the LORD has poured out on you a spirit of deep sleep. He has closed the eyes of your prophets and visionaries.  11 -   All the future events in this vision are like a sealed book to them. When you give it to those who can read, they will say, "We can't read it because it is sealed."  12 -   When you give it to those who cannot read, they will say, "We don't know how to read."  13 -   And so the Lord says, "These people say they are Mine. They honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. And their worship of Me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.  14 -   Because of this, I will once again astound these hypocrites with amazing wonders. The wisdom of the wise will pass away, and the intelligence of the intelligent will disappear."

 - - - - -

Isaiah 30:8-13 NLT  Now go and write down these words. Write them in a book. They will stand until the end of time as a witness  9 -   that these people are stubborn rebels who refuse to pay attention to the LORD's instructions.  10 -   They tell the seers, "Stop seeing visions!" They tell the prophets, "Don't tell us what is right. Tell us nice things. Tell us lies.  11 -   Forget all this gloom. Get off your narrow path. Stop telling us about your 'Holy One of Israel.'"  12 -   This is the reply of the Holy One of Israel: "Because you despise what I tell you and trust instead in oppression and lies,  13 -   calamity will come upon you suddenly--like a bulging wall that bursts and falls. In an instant it will collapse and come crashing down.

Isaiah 30:20-22 NLT  Though the Lord gave you adversity for food and suffering for drink, He will still be with you to teach you. You will see your teacher with your own eyes.  21 -   Your own ears will hear Him. Right behind you a voice will say, "This is the way you should go," whether to the right or to the left.  22 -   Then you will destroy all your silver idols and your precious gold images. You will throw them out like filthy rags, saying to them, "Good riddance!"

God's Provision

Matthew 6:24-34 NLT "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. - 25 "That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life--whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn't life more than food, and your body more than clothing? - 26 Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to Him than they are? - 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? - 28 "And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, - 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. - 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? - 31 "So don't worry about these things, saying, 'What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?' - 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. - 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need. - 34 "So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.

Matthew 17:24-27 NLT On their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax came to Peter and asked him, "Doesn't your teacher pay the Temple tax?" - 25 "Yes, He does," Peter replied. Then he went into the house. But before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, "What do you think, Peter? Do kings tax their own people or the people they have conquered? " - 26 "They tax the people they have conquered," Peter replied. "Well, then," Jesus said, "the citizens are free! - 27 However, we don't want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us."

Mark 8:15-21 NLT As they were crossing the lake, Jesus warned them, "Watch out! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and of Herod." - 16 At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn't brought any bread. - 17 Jesus knew what they were saying, so He said, "Why are you arguing about having no bread? Don't you know or understand even yet? Are your hearts too hard to take it in? - 18 'You have eyes--can't you see? You have ears--can't you hear?' Don't you remember anything at all? - 19 When I fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers did you pick up afterward?" "Twelve," they said. - 20 "And when I fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers did you pick up?" "Seven," they said. - 21 "Don't you understand yet?" He asked them.

Romans 4:16-25 NLT So the promise is received by faith. It is given as a free gift. And we are all certain to receive it, whether or not we live according to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham's. For Abraham is the father of all who believe. - 17 That is what the Scriptures mean when God told him, "I have made you the father of many nations." This happened because Abraham believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who creates new things out of nothing. - 18 Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping--believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, "That's how many descendants you will have!" - 19 And Abraham's faith did not weaken, even though, at about 100 years of age, he figured his body was as good as dead--and so was Sarah's womb. - 20 Abraham never wavered in believing God's promise. In fact, his faith grew stronger, and in this he brought glory to God. - 21 He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever He promises. - 22 And because of Abraham's faith, God counted him as righteous. - 23 And when God counted him as righteous, it wasn't just for Abraham's benefit. It was recorded - 24 for our benefit, too, assuring us that God will also count us as righteous if we believe in Him, the One who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. - 25 He was handed over to die because of our sins, and He was raised to life to make us right with God.

Philippians 4:17-19 NLT - 17 I don't say this because I want a gift from you. Rather, I want you to receive a reward for your kindness. - 18 At the moment I have all I need--and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God. - 19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

1 Timothy 6:17 NLT Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.

Daily Confession:

I tell you not to worry about everyday life--whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear; don't worry about these things.
Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and God will give you everything you need; and don't worry about tomorrow.

Don't you know or understand even yet?
When Jesus fed the 5,000 with five loaves of bread, how many baskets of leftovers were picked up afterward?
And when Jesus fed the 4,000 with seven loaves, how many large baskets of leftovers were picked up?
Don't you understand yet?

These promises are received by faith. We are all certain to receive them if we have faith like Abraham's. He was fully convinced that God is able to do whatever He promises.

I have all I need--and more! I am generously supplied with gifts!
God who takes care of me will supply all my needs from His glorious riches, which have been given to me in Christ Jesus.

God richly gives me all I need for my enjoyment.

He came to His hometown and began teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers? "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? "And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man get all these things?" And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household." And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.  - Matthew 13:54-58 NASB

And when they came to the crowd, a man came to Him, kneeling down to Him and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and grievously vexed; for oftentimes he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him here to Me. And Jesus rebuked the demon, and he departed out of him. And the child was cured from that very hour. Then the disciples came to Jesus apart, and said, Why could we not cast him out? And Jesus said to them, Because of your unbelief. For truly I say to you, If you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, Move from here to there. And it shall move. And nothing shall be impossible to you.  - Matthew 17:14-20 MKJV

Jesus went out from there and *came into His hometown; and His disciples *followed Him. When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue; and the many listeners were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things, and what is this wisdom given to Him, and such miracles as these performed by His hands? "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? Are not His sisters here with us?" And they took offense at Him. Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and among his own relatives and in his own household." And He could do no miracle there except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And He wondered at their unbelief. And He was going around the villages teaching.  - Mark 6:1-6 NASB

And one of the crowd answered Him, "Teacher, I brought You my son, possessed with a spirit which makes him mute; and whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not do it." And He *answered them and *said, "O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him to Me!" They brought the boy to Him. When he saw Him, immediately the spirit threw him into a convulsion, and falling to the ground, he began rolling around and foaming at the mouth. And He asked his father, "How long has this been happening to him?" And he said, "From childhood. "It has often thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us!" And Jesus said to him, " 'If You can?' All things are possible to him who believes." Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, "I do believe; help my unbelief." When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly gathering, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and do not enter him again." After crying out and throwing him into terrible convulsions, it came out; and the boy became so much like a corpse that most of them said, "He is dead!" But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him; and he got up. When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, "Why could we not drive it out?" And He said to them, "This kind cannot come out by anything but prayer."  - Mark 9:17-29 NASB

When they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it. After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country. They went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either. Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen.  - Mark 16:11-14 NASB

What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written, "THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED."  - Romans 3:3-4 NASB

For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, (as it is written, "A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU") in the presence of Him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist. In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, "SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE." Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb; yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.  - Romans 4:16-22 NASB

If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too. But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear; for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either. Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God's kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree? For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery--so that you will not be wise in your own estimation--that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB." "THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS." From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God's choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.  - Romans 11:16-32 NASB

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, putting me into service, even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief; and the grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.  - 1 Timothy 1:12-15 NASB

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.  - Hebrews 3:12-13 KJV

Since then it remains that some must enter into it, and since they to whom it was first preached did not enter in because of unbelief, He again marks out a certain day, saying in David, "Today," (after so long a time). Even as it is said, "Today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts." For if Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. So then there remains a rest to the people of God. For he who has entered into his rest, he also has ceased from his own works, as God did from His. Therefore let us labor to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of unbelief.  - Hebrews 4:6-11 MKJV

The Teacher

"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. - Joh 16:13 NASB

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. - Joh 14:26 NASB

As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. - 1Jn 2:27 NASB

"They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, 'Know the LORD,' for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them," declares the LORD, "for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." - Jer 31:34 NASB

"AND THEY SHALL NOT TEACH EVERYONE HIS FELLOW CITIZEN, AND EVERYONE HIS BROTHER, SAYING, 'KNOW THE LORD,' FOR ALL WILL KNOW ME, FROM THE LEAST TO THE GREATEST OF THEM. - Heb 8:11 NASB

Called, Chosen, and Faithful

You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, And called from its remotest parts And said to you, 'You are My servant, I have chosen you and not rejected you. 'Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.' "Behold, all those who are angered at you will be shamed and dishonored; Those who contend with you will be as nothing and will perish.
Isaiah 41:9-11 NASB

"For many are called, but few are chosen."
Matthew 22:14 NASB

But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God's OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
1 Peter 2:9 NASB

"I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?"
Luke 18:8 NASB

"These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful."
Revelation 17:14 NASB

The Remaking of the Vessel

Where will you be stricken again, As you continue in your rebellion? The whole head is sick And the whole heart is faint. From the sole of the foot even to the head There is nothing sound in it, Only bruises, welts and raw wounds, Not pressed out or bandaged, Nor softened with oil. Isaiah 1:5-6 NASB

Let the priests, the LORD'S ministers, Weep between the porch and the altar, And let them say, "Spare Your people, O LORD, And do not make Your inheritance a reproach, A byword among the nations. Why should they among the peoples say, 'Where is their God?'" Joel 2:17 NASB

"Arise and go down to the potter's house, and there I will announce My words to you." Jeremiah 18:2 NASB

But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make. Jeremiah 18:4 NASB

IF - Isaiah 1:16-19

16 "Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
Remove the evil of your deeds from My sight. Cease to do evil,
17  Learn to do good;
Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Defend the orphan, Plead for the widow.

18  "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the LORD,
"Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool.

19  "If you consent and obey,
You will eat the best of the land;

Isaiah 1:16-19 NASB
